People with Stronger Writing Skills Are Better at Their Jobs, Get Paid More,” the profiles of freelance professionals were reviewed for their writing prowess. The goal: to ascertain if a person’s written skills had an impact on their hireability, credibility, or their potential earnings. Check out the findings below! Naturally, writers make fewer mistakes than other types of freelance professionals. Those with writing and translation jobs make about 10.1 errors per 100 words, while those in sales and marketing jobs make about 17.7 errors. IT and programming came in last at 19.3 errors per 100 words. But even if you think that writing doesn’t have an impact on your profession, think again. For the most part, stronger writers stand to earn more than their grammatically challenged counterparts. In the engineering and manufacturing field, people who made between zero and 10 mistakes per 100 words earned $520.64, while those with 30 or more errors made less than half of that, at $237.42. In the sales and marketing industry, zero to 10 errors per 100 words garnered earnings of $498.26, while 30 or more mistakes equaled a dismal $182.07 in earnings. Why is there such a vast difference in earnings? Grammarly speculates that people who have stronger writing skills might be more detail-oriented and consequently perform better in their positions. It’s fair to assess, though, that the strength of your writing has a direct impact on your earnings potential. So what can you do if you’re not the best writer? Here are some tips on how spruce up your writing skills, and in turn, make more money. Write often. Just like any skill, your writing can only improve if you keep writing. So take the time to write, even if it’s just for 15 minutes or so a day. You can write on any topic, but it should be something that interests you to motivate you to keep writing. Eventually your writing- and your own eye for editing your work- will grow stronger. Read regularly. Believe it or not, reading will greatly help improve your writing. You’ll learn new styles and techniques that you can apply to your own work- or finally learn how to spell certain words that have always been a challenge for you. Ask for help. Before dashing off a response email to a potential boss, you should ask a trusted friend or family member to review it for you, particularly if you think your writing skills are a little shaky.
